Priceline Founder Jay Walker Files Patent Suits Against More than 100 Companies

Priceline founder Jay Walker filed fifteen patent lawsuits against more than 100 companies on April 11. The patents at issue include internet technologies at the heart of banking, online gaming, and bargain websites. A press release said that the suits are a response to the unwillingness of the defendant companies to negotiate licensing fees.

USPTO Announces the Beginning of New Expedited Patent Examination

The US Patent and Trademark Office will begin accepting requests for expedited patent examination on May 4th, 2011. Expedited examination will cost $4,000 in addition to standard examination fees. The PTO characterized the new program as an attempt to give applicants greater control over the timeline of the examination process.

Piracy, Pornography and Conspiracy:  How Judges Are Standing Up to Copyright Trolls

In an attempt to secure large settlements from as many parties as possible, the adult entertainment industry has been joining individuals from the same district who illegally downloaded the same film in a single claim as co-conspirators. This enables them to discover Doe-defendants’ identities and get them to settle rather than be a party in a pornography suit. It worked for a while, but there is a problem, the defendants aren’t co-conspirators.
